Last weekend I was at the Asia Region Art Educators conference. We had the opportunity to meet and hear from some artists working in Hong Kong. One of these artists was particularly interesting and inspiring, Liina Klauss. She does “Trashscapes”, artworks created from plastic washed up on beaches in Hong Kong. She runs sessions with schools and corporations and her art is definitely inspiring, as well as being extremely disturbing to think that this was collected from just one beach!
Do check out her website: http://liinaklauss.blogspot.hk/ to see more of what she does. She has photos of her work and the processes to create them.
As an art educator I hope to be able to do such projects and similar ‘trash’ art with my students in the future. It would create some fabulous art and, more importantly, create greater awareness amongst my students (and me) about all the plastic that we use every day and it’s impact on our environment.
Here is a copy of one of her beach installations “trashscape”
Maybe we could all have a go at something like this? We don’t have to go to a beach, we can collect and keep what we use in the home everyday and make some art out of that! Think I’ll try it with Tali and will post up the results.
