Macau

Macau is in a similar situation as Hong Kong, former Portuguese colony returned to the motherland of China in 1998 it enjoys a semi-autonomous status.  It has it’s own government, money, passports and Chinese nationals require a visa to enter.  Smaller than Hong Kong, it draws in big crowds, mostly for gambling at the many casinos and to see shows such as Cirque du Soleil and House of Dancing Water. It has some historical sights and some great food.  I’ve been there on weekend getaways and also on day trips.

When: several times between 2002 and 2012

Where:  On a weekend getaway with A. we stayed at the Four Seasons – highly recommended!

How: From Hong Kong it’s a ferry / catamaran ride.  You can also get there by helicopter if you have the cash

Weather: Like Hong Kong and southern China, sub-tropical climate with a hot, humid and wet summer and a cooler drier winter.

Food:  southern Chinese, Portuguese, egg tarts, international

Sights: ruins of the Church of St Paul, the show “House of Dancing Water”

Tips:  The Four Seasons hotel has gorgeous swimming pools – you can forget that you’re in a city.
