I spent a couple of weeks travelling around the coast of this Mediterranean country. The people are very friendly and though places still bare the scars of the 1990s war, the country is picking itself up and moving on. I even accomplished my goal for the trip which was to see a dalmatian dog in Dalmatia!

When: August 2002
Where: Zagreb (the capital) briefly, Split, Hvar (island), Dubrovnik
Who: a best friend another friend who I bumped into out there!
How: Getting there took the train from Warsaw (via Vienna) to Zagreb. Getting out : train from Dubrovnik to Munich and on from there.
Weather: Some rain but mostly warm and hot sunny days with pleasant evenings.
Food: not great. average Italian really.
Sights: The crystal clear waters off the coast, Dubrovnik old town and the beautiful Croatians partying on holiday! The Mediterranean light. Dalmatians on the Dalmatian coast!
Surprises: the average food and how dead Zagreb was, but then again it was August when Europe shuts down!
Tips: Get out on to to the water and island hop. Book ahead for popular places.
